Goals Above Replacement (GAR) & xGAR

A definitive knowledge base for sports analysts, fantasy hockey players, and enthusiasts tracking historical, conceptual, and event-based hockey analytics.

I. The Mathematical Foundation of GAR

Goals Above Replacement quantifies a player's total contribution to their team into a single metric: goals added relative to a theoretical “replacement-level” player — an easily obtainable minor-league call-up or waiver-wire acquisition.

The aggregate value is expressed through a multi-component summation:

GAR = EVGO + EVGD + PPG + SHG + PenD + PenT

Where:

  • EVGO = Even-Strength Offense Component
  • EVGD = Even-Strength Defense Component
  • PPG = Power-Play Offensive Contributions
  • SHG = Shorthanded Defensive Contributions
  • PenD = Penalty Draw Differential Value
  • PenT = Penalty Taken Impact Adjustment

II. Transitioning to Expected Metrics (xGAR)

While GAR evaluates actual outcomes — which can be heavily distorted by high or low on-ice shooting percentages or goaltending variance — xGAR replaces real goal outcomes with Expected Goals (xG) values.

xGAR calculates quality-of-shot metrics based on historical shot tracking parameters:

  • Distance from the net and exact angle of the shot.
  • Type of shot (wrist shot, slap shot, backhand, tip-in).
  • Event context (rebound shots, rush plays, off-the-cycle sequences).

By utilizing xGAR, front offices isolate systemic player performance and predictive talent evaluation from pure puck-luck regression.
